Join the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Oregon (SERV-OR)

The coordinator of the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers, recently contacted the OAAOM, requesting assistance in recruiting LAcs in Oregon who would be willing to volunteer medical care in the event of a major emergency. Acupuncturists are not traditionally part of emergency response programs, but they are making an effort to change that.

SERV-OR is a database of licensed health care professionals who have registered to volunteer in response to federal, state and/or local emergencies. The registry is sponsored by the Oregon Public Health Division in partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps.

Position Summary

The Herbal Dispensary Manager’s primary function is to facilitate the smooth operation of OCOM’s Herbal Dispensary so that patients receive their herbal formulas in a timely manner and students receive excellent experience and training during their Herbal Practicum course.

The Herbal Dispensary Manager will have direct responsibility for managing eight part-time staff members including seven Herbal Dispensary Supervisors and one Herbologist.  The Herbal Dispensary Manager reports to Miles Sledd, Director of Clinic Operations.

This is a full-time, exempt position with regular work hours from 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.  OCOM offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits package including medical, dental and complementary medicine insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, paid holidays and paid vacation.

This position is currently located in SE Portland, however in September 2012, the college will move to its new location in downtown Portland’s Old Town Chinatown neighborhood and this position will work in that location.

Essential Functions

• Develops and implements potential new revenue streams for the Herbal Dispensary through sales to the larger AOM practitioner community.
• Collaborates with the clinical faculty in identifying and sourcing herbal medicine products for use in the Clinic
• Stays abreast of the regulatory environment regarding medicinal herb sales and formulation
• Develops and uses procedures that ensure the proper handling and storage of herbal medications
• Develops and uses inventory systems to ensure proper tracking of herbs used and held on hand
• Makes recommendations for best practices, improving safety for patients and reducing risk in dispensing herbal medicines
• Models the ethos of OCOM’s core values and exemplary customer service

 Education and Experience Required

• Two years’ hands-on experience dispensing herbal formulations is required
• Experience directly supervising the work of others is required
• Current licensure as an acupuncturist in the state of Oregon (LAc) is preferred but not required
• NCCAOM Oriental Medicine Diplomate (both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology Diplomate) is preferred but not required
• Significant previous experience in a leadership role within a retail operation is required
• Previous experience in an herbal dispensary or pharmacy is strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Current working knowledge of Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese herbs in pin yin is strongly preferred
• Familiarity with quality control and assurance methods for product safety
• Demonstrated ability to establish, implement and improve protocols and procedures
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
• A genuine passion for supervising and mentoring direct reports
• Strong attention to detail is critical
• Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain an orderly, clean and visually pleasing workspace
• Good sense of humor is highly desirable

In the past year that I’ve been a member I have become ten thousand times more aware of the political situations involving acupuncturists both statewide and nationally. The board has been involved in presenting fun and informative events such as the Forks over Knives film showing and panel discussion, The Treasures of Oregon lecture series, and our annual conference and meeting. The OAAOM has also been involved as a watchdog and advocate for acupuncturists regarding dry needling legislation and inclusion in the Oregon Health Plan.

Is there something you are passionate about that we are not doing?

Run as a member of the board and advocate for your passion! We are open to new ideas and need help implementing some of the old ones. Whether you can contribute a few hours per week or a few hours per month, there are opportunities to do good in this organization. Event Flyer – Mindful Medicine Worldwide

Acupuncturist Grainne McKeown will discuss her clinical experiences in the practice of Chinese Medicine in developing areas.  She is the founder of Mindful Medicine Worldwide, a non-profit setting up low cost alternative health care clinics in developing countries.

Ms. McKeown will focus on common conditions of patients she sees in these clinics:

• stroke and cardiovascular issues
• gynecology and obstetrics
• extreme kidney yang deficiency
• infectious diseases

She will discuss types of patients, how they present, as well as our main treatment strategies including acupuncture, diet and nutrition, and exercises. This class is useful for anyone who has an interest in work in developing areas as a physician.
